The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
